Combatting Stress

Stress can cause both a physical and/or mental responses, and is a normal reaction that many people experience when change or challenges occur in their lives. The past two years have been incredibly stressful for many of us, and it’s important to look after ourselves.

There are times that stress can be a positive thing such as keeping us alert and motivated however, it becomes a problem when stress becomes chronic, with no reprieve.

The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) controls the heart rate, breathing, vision changes and more – it is our built in “Fight or Flight” response. Chronic stress can cause wear and tear on the ANS, and can lead to physical and emotional symptoms. These symptoms can include;

  • Chest Pains
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Exhaustion or Insomnia
  • Muscle Tension or Jaw Clenching
  • Stomach Trouble
  • Weakened Immune System
  • Irritability and/or Anxiety

It is important to notice the signs of stress and try and combat it. There are a number of tools which you can use including;

  • Exercise
  • Set goals
  • Massage to reduce tension
  • Meditation
  • Create a plan

Once you have gotten on top of your stress, it is important to put in place ways to mitigate your stress. Stress prevention tools could include;

  • Implementing a routine
  • Regular massages
  • Yoga
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Eating correctly

As you may have noticed, massage is mentioned in both stress release as well as prevention. Massage aims to flush out the cortisol through the circulation system. Massage triggers a relaxation response, leading to an increase in endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. An increase in these hormones may help with muscle tension, reduction in blood pressure, improved sleep and increased mental wellbeing.

Our remedial massage therapist Lauren is able to use different techniques to help reduce tension and increase blood flow through the body.
