Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is very common due to the unstable nature of the shoulder joint. Therefore, it is vital for all the muscles in and around the shoulder to be precisely coordinated in order to achieve a normal functioning shoulder. Additionally, due to its instability even the smallest injury to one of these muscles or supporting structures can throw the entire shoulder out of whack.

Most shoulder pain is caused by one of the following:

Impingement
This occurs when the top of the shoulder blade (acromion) puts pressure on the underlying soft tissue.

Tendinitis
In particular the 4 rotator cuff muscles which are the deepest muscles of the shoulder joint.

Bursitis
Is the inflammation of the bursa (fluid filled sac) in the shoulder which generally occurs secondary to tendinitis.

Dislocation/Instability
This can happen as a result of instability or from overuse.

Arthritis
Generally occurs with increasing age but can occur earlier following an injury, for example a dislocation.

Frozen Shoulder
A condition characterised by severe stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint .

Through a thorough assessment and carefully structured exercise program from your physiotherapist, normalisation of the movement in and around the shoulder can be achieved. Generally, the quicker you get on to it the better the prognosis. So make sure you give Ormond Physiotherapy a call if you are experiencing any discomfort in your shoulder.
