World Physiotherapy Day

On September 8th, we celebrate World Physiotherapy Day!

Physiotherapists are a special kind of person; they listen, help, nurture, and encourage.

They always have our best interests at the forefront of their mind and want us to get back to moving as best we can!

But, do you know what they are and what they do?

What is a Physiotherapist?
A Physiotherapist is a highly trained Allied Health Professional who is an expert in the structure of the human body and its movement. They attend university for a minimum of 4 years to obtain their qualification and are registered health practitioners with AHPRA.

What does a Physiotherapist do?
Physiotherapists work with people of all different ages and backgrounds. Physiotherapists assess and diagnose an injury or condition and then plan and execute the management of the underlying injury or condition.

Physiotherapists can treat and help manage a broad range of health conditions, such as sporting injuries, musculoskeletal injuries, and chronic conditions like osteoarthritis and stroke recovery.

How can a Physiotherapist help you?
Physiotherapists can perform a range of different assessment techniques to determine what is causing your pain.

After an assessment, your therapist will provide a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan to get you back to your pre-injury self as quickly as possible. Sometimes imaging is required to confirm their suspicions, but your therapist can refer for these.

Physiotherapists use a range of treatment techniques, including manual therapy, dry needling, ultrasound, taping, and exercise prescription, to name a few.

Your Physiotherapist can also liaise with your workplace or sporting coach regarding how you are progressing and what should be avoided to help your rehabilitation.

So, as you can see, Physiotherapists are very knowledgeable individuals and are an essential tool to have in your health toolkit. They help us with our everyday niggles as well as more serious injury rehabilitation.

Next time you see your Physiotherapist, say thanks, and let them know that you’re grateful they help you be the best physical you!
